Grinnell, IA

The

Marvelous

Jewel of the Prairie

Grinnell is  rightfully known as the "Jewel of the Prairie", with some of Iowa's best independent restaurants, a host of unique retailers, and a legendary downtown.  Grinnell has been named one of the Top Ten Coolest Small Towns in America.

Josiah Bushnell Grinnell founded the town in 1854

J.B. Grinnell was a passionate abolitionist and an active participant in the Underground Railroad.  J. B.  had the idea to establish a new settlement when his friend Horace Greeley, the famous editor of the New York Tribune, advised him to head west.  When Grinnell learned of two rail lines that would intersect in central Iowa, his mind was set.
